Film Distribution

Distribution = Marketing + duplication + eventually getting it into cinemas
Marketing = Advertising + Promotion

A film distributor brings a film into a movie market place, which is often highly competitive, all films are distributed in different ways.

Distribution companies such as Sony, Disney and Warner receive films straight from production companies whereas small independant distribution companies such as Lionsgate, Metrodome and Momentum buy films at film festivals to distribute.

Distributor has to :
  • decide the USP
  • release date
  • be very clear on target audience
  • get budget right
  • get audience in to look at the rough drafts of films (pre-release)
  • stretch marketing budget as far as it will go
  • get as large audience as possible so to make the biggest profit

15-24 is the largest audience for movies, they are the most frequent cinema go-ers.

Advertising & promotions are paid for - straight forward media

Publicity is free - editorial content

The marketing campagne needs to be unique from all others, campagne elements consist of things such as -

  • trailer
  • poser
  • internet
  • mobile
  • radio
  • television
  • outdoor advertising
  • viral campagne
  • word of mouth (BIG element)
  • multimedia products (website address)
  • reviews & critics

All elements need to be synergisitic, which means to have the same identity.

The first element is usually the poster and then the second is the trailer which is the most important key to sell the film.

Trailers are broke up into three sections; a teaser trailer, the main trailer and the shorter version of the main trailer.
