Hostel Film Trailer

Summary of the plot

Two American college students go backpacking through Europe, on the way they pick up a new friend from Iceland. During their stay they are on a search for women, and are eventually lured by another backpacker to a particular out-of-the-way Slovakian town supposedly packed with women who are as easy as they are gorgeous. Soon the three friends arrive and pair off with two exotic beauties, they are having the time of their lives until they slowly start to realise that the hostel is not all it seems. They have been sold to a sadistic group of the 'Elite Hunting' and their dreams start to become their worst nightmares.

Analysis

The text i am analysing is a trailer for the horror film Hostel, made in 2005 directed by Eli Roth.

The establishing shot is of an abandoned warehouse, the warehouse is dark and run down, this straight away demonstrates the genre of the film being horror. An extreme close up is then shown of water dripping, connoting a sewer. This shot is building up the atmosphere for the audience and is leading up to something big and gruesome. Super imposed text is edited on top of a montage of different images such as a bag being pulled off a boys head signifying a tortue scene, a close up of different weapons, the same boy then struggling and wimping tied to a chair and so on. The super imposed words read 'There is a place where all your darkest sickest fantasies are possible, where you can experience anything you desire, where you can torture punish or kill for a price' these sum up the films story line. The next super imposed words read 'Inspired by true events, by the briliant minds that brought you "cabin fever" "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" "And Kill Bill" these last few words are their to reasure the audience that the film is going to live up to how ggood the other films were, so this targets their audience by mentioning films that have been liked and watched before.

Throughout the trailer there is a non-diegetic soundtrack which builds pace until the image shown is of a pair of clippers over a toe, the soundtrack then goes into a shriek and the image fades to black signifying to the audience that the toe has just been cut off. Diegetic sounds are also shown like water dripping from a pipe, the sound of chain saws, wimpers and screams these are all their to set the scene of the horror genre and to build tension for the audience. The only voice over in the whole trailer is at the end where the title of the film 'Hostel' is read out in a scary deep manly voice.
